# Son of Sam

David Berkowitz, who called himself "Son of Sam" in letters to police and the press, killed six people and wounded seven others in a series of shooting attacks across New York City between 1976 and 1977, paralyzing the city with fear and spawning one of the largest manhunts in NYPD history. He was arrested in August 1977 and pleaded guilty to six counts of second-degree murder, receiving a sentence of 25 years to life for each count, to be served consecutively. He has been repeatedly denied parole and remains incarcerated in New York State.
