Clark Gable Clark Gable was known as "The King of Hollywood," a title bestowed by the film industry and public during his reign as one of Hollywood's biggest box-office draws from the early 1930s through the 1950s. Born in Cadiz, Ohio, he rose through the ranks of contract players at MGM and won his only Academy Award for 'It Happened One Night' (1934), one of the first films to win all five major Oscar categories. His iconic portrayal of Rhett Butler in 'Gone with the Wind' (1939) is considered one of the definitive performances of Hollywood's Golden Age.
