Charlie Chaplin Sir Charles Chaplin was the towering genius of silent cinema, a filmmaker, composer, and performer whose 'Tramp' character became the most recognizable figure in the history of the medium. Born into poverty in London, he rose to become the most famous person on Earth during the silent era, and his films 'The Kid' (1921), 'City Lights' (1931), and 'Modern Times' (1936) remain cornerstones of world cinema. He co-founded United Artists in 1919, giving artists unprecedented control over their work, and his 1940 satire 'The Great Dictator' was one of the boldest anti-fascist statements Hollywood ever produced.
