# Charlemagne

Charlemagne was King of the Franks from 768, King of the Lombards from 774, and Holy Roman Emperor from 800, uniting much of Western Europe during the Early Middle Ages for the first time since the fall of the Western Roman Empire. His reign, known as the Carolingian Renaissance, was a period of cultural and intellectual revival, and his administrative innovations helped create the foundations of medieval European civilization. He is often called the "Father of Europe."
