Bertrand Russell Bertrand Russell was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, and Nobel laureate in Literature (1950) whose Principia Mathematica (1910–1913, with A. N. Whitehead) attempted to ground all of mathematics in formal logic. He was a founding figure of analytic philosophy, a pioneering philosopher of language, and a lifelong campaigner for pacifism, nuclear disarmament, and rational secularism. His popular writings, including A History of Western Philosophy (1945), brought rigorous philosophical thought to a mass readership.
