American scientist who discovered genetic transposition — the ability of genes to change position on a chromosome ("jumping genes"). Her work, done in the 1940s–50s, was decades ahead of its time and largely dismissed until molecular biology caught up. She received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983, 30 years after her discovery.
