# Joe Batters

Anthony Accardo was the dominant figure in the Chicago Outfit for much of the mid-twentieth century, formally leading the organization as boss from 1947 to 1957 and continuing to wield decisive influence behind the scenes for decades thereafter. He served as an enforcer under Al Capone in his early career and was suspected of involvement in the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre, though he was never convicted of any violent offense. He was tried for tax evasion in 1960 but acquitted, and he lived openly in suburban Chicago until his death in 1992, having spent over six decades in organized crime without ever serving a significant prison sentence.
