Anders Breivik Anders Breivik carried out two coordinated attacks in Norway on July 22, 2011: a car bomb explosion in central Oslo that killed eight people, followed by a mass shooting at a youth political camp on the island of Utøya that killed 69 people, making it the deadliest attack in Norway since World War II. Motivated by extreme far-right and anti-Islam ideology, he had prepared a lengthy manifesto describing his grievances and plans. He was convicted of terrorism and premeditated murder in 2012 and sentenced to 21 years of preventive detention, the maximum available under Norwegian law, with provisions for extension.
