Amelia Earhart Amelia Earhart was an American aviation pioneer who became the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932, receiving the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross for that achievement. She set multiple speed and altitude records and was the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland. She disappeared on July 2, 1937, over the central Pacific Ocean while attempting to circumnavigate the globe, and neither she nor her navigator Fred Noonan was ever found.
