Alfred Hitchcock Sir Alfred Hitchcock is the most famous and widely studied film director in history, "The Master of Suspense" whose psychological thrillers established the grammar of modern cinema. Born in Leytonstone, East London, he began his career in the British silent film industry and pioneered the thriller genre with films like 'The 39 Steps' (1935) and 'The Lady Vanishes' (1938) before moving to Hollywood, where he produced an extraordinary run of masterpieces including 'Rebecca' (1940), 'Rear Window' (1954), 'Vertigo' (1958), 'North by Northwest' (1959), and 'Psycho' (1960). Despite five Best Director nominations, he never won an Academy Award — a perceived oversight he bore with characteristic dark wit.
