# Alan Turing

Alan Turing was a British mathematician and computer scientist widely considered the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. During World War II, he developed techniques to break German Enigma-enciphered messages, making a crucial contribution to the Allied victory, and his 1936 paper introducing the Turing machine established the conceptual framework for modern computing. He was prosecuted by the British government in 1952 for homosexuality and died in 1954; he was granted a royal pardon posthumously in 2013.
